CHAPTER SEVEN

Roman

“So this is it?” I flip through the folder again, annoyed that it contains so little of substance.

“Yeah, Boss. That’s all we could find,” Viktor tells me. I run my eye over the sum total of Naomi Stanton’s deep background check. Adopted as an infant by a pair of wealthy socialites, it says nothing of her birth parents, or what happened to them. And as for the elusive “Stanton” family Inessa had been so glowing about, they seem to be a conundrum, too.

Sure, there are details on their extensive family holdings and impressive bank accounts. Social media profiles show a well-groomed pair that look like they just stepped out of the pages of Vanity Fair. Naomi herself seems like the perfect socialite daughter, smiling radiantly from yachts and private jets and mingling with the pretty people.

So why does something simply feel…off?

“It’s too perfect,” I mutter tracing an image of her bikini-clad form with my eyes. She’s holding a cocktail in the sunset smiling happily for the photographer. Typical Instagram moment, and she looks fucking beautiful.

“You couldn’t find anything else?” I ask. What’s bothering me is what’s missing. No rumors of drunken sorority pranks. No ill-chosen relationships with boys her parents were opposed to. By all accounts, she was a top-notch scholar, kept her nose clean, and made her parents proud.

That doesn’t sound anything like the woman I met at the party a couple of days ago. That woman would have made waves.

“What’s bothering you?” asks Viktor.

“She’s too clean,” I say, realizing it makes me sound pissy. Screw it. I didn’t get this far by ignoring my instincts.

“Too clean?” Viktor shakes his head as he laughs. “I never realized that would be a problem. Are you sure you’re not just looking for an excuse to throw in the towel?”

I exhale as I sit back. Maybe he’s right.

“I should probably see her again,” I say. “It’ll give me a better feel for who she is.”

I’m lying. If anything, it’ll cloud my judgment.

“Good idea,” Viktor agrees, reaching for his phone. “I’ll set it up. Dinner at Kato?”

“Jesus, you’re like a maiden aunt matchmaker,” I grumble, though I don’t stop him. “Make sure we have a private table. I’m not in the mood for distractions.”
